A threadlocker is not a permanent adhesive. It's an anaerobic material that fills the tiny gap between threads and hardens in the absence of air. If oil fills that gap, it blocks the cure. That's why the product selection has to start with the surface, not the temperature.
Looking back, I should have run a sample through the shrink tunnel with the exact insert batch. At the time, the tunnel temperature seemed well within the product rating, so I didn't.

The Fix: A Checklist That Respects the Difference
Don't confuse 'heat resistant' with 'right for this job.'
The fix wasn't a better adhesive. It was a checklist. I now keep a 250ml bottle of Loctite 243 on the shelf for general assembly and reserve Loctite 272 for genuine high heat, high stress threaded assemblies. But the product selection is only one line on the list.
- Confirm the substrate and surface condition—especially metal components from machining.
- Use Loctite 243 (250ml bottle is our standard) for medium-strength, oil-tolerant applications where disassembly might be needed.
- Use Loctite 272 only for true high heat, high-stress threaded assemblies, not as a default upgrade.
- Test a sample through the actual production step, including the shrink tunnel.
- Write down the reasoning, not just the product number.
Since I started using this list, we've caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months. There's something satisfying about that—not because the checklist is clever, but because it catches problems before they become customer complaints.
I still keep a bottle of Loctite 272 on hand. It's a genuinely good high heat product. But it's no longer my first instinct. 'Heat resistant' and 'right for this job' are two different questions. The first answer was Loctite 272. The second answer was the process around it.
